Sofia is een cognitieve trainingstool, een software tool welke op wetenschap gebaseerde cognitieve taken bevat. Sofia heeft als doel om het welzijn van kinderen te verbeteren middels het verbeteren van specifieke cognitieve functies. Sofia is ontwikkeld in samenwerking met professionals van Kempenhaeghe en de Universiteit Maastricht.
Wat is cognitieve training? Cognitieve training is een aanpak, welke gebruikt maakt van gestructureerde taken, met als doel om cognitieve functies te behouden, te verbeteren of verslechtering af te remmen (1). Deze cognitieve functies variëren per cognitieve training en richten zich op functies zoals het geheugen, aandachtsprocessen en probleem-oplossend vermogen (1). Literatuur laat zien dat het effect van cognitieve training wordt gemedieerd door de neuroplasticiteit van het brein (1). De definitie van neuroplasticiteit wordt beschreven als “de mogelijkheid van het zenuwstelsel om zich aan te passen wanneer het wordt blootgesteld aan intrinsieke of extrinsieke stimuli, zo kunnen de structuur, connecties en functies gereorganiseerd worden (2).
De naam Sofia stamt af van het Griekse woord Sophia, dit betekent wijsheid. In de software tool Sofia, is Sofia een wijze dino. Sofia leeft in een grot en heeft vele spullen tot haar beschikking. Door het spelen van cognitieve spellen geeft Sofia verschillende beloningen in de vorm van munten. Hiermee kunnen spullen verzameld worden uit de winkel.
